Common Nerve Pain Conditions

We diagnose and treat many forms of nerve pain and nerve-related conditions. Below are some of the most common types we help patients manage every day:

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a type of nerve pain that occurs as a complication of shingles, a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. After a shingles outbreak, some people continue to experience persistent pain, burning, tingling, or sensitivity in the affected area, even after the rash has healed. PHN can affect daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life, making proper evaluation and treatment important for managing symptoms.

Postherpetic neuralgia can present in a variety of ways. Many people experience persistent burning, stabbing, or aching pain in the area where a shingles outbreak occurred. Some also notice heightened sensitivity to touch, tingling, or numbness. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and may interfere with daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life, making timely evaluation and treatment important.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is a chronic pain condition that usually affects an arm or a leg after an injury, surgery, stroke, or heart attack. It occurs when the sympathetic nervous system malfunctions, causing prolonged or excessive pain that is often out of proportion to the original injury. RSD can lead to swelling, changes in skin color or temperature, stiffness, and decreased mobility in the affected limb, significantly impacting daily activities and quality of life.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy can present in several ways. Many people experience intense, burning, or throbbing pain in the affected limb, often out of proportion to the original injury. Swelling, stiffness, and changes in skin color or temperature are also common. Some individuals notice increased sensitivity to touch, decreased mobility, or muscle weakness. These symptoms can interfere with daily activities and overall quality of life, making timely evaluation and treatment important.

Shingles

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is a viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After a person recovers from chickenpox, the virus can remain dormant in nerve tissue and reactivate later in life as shingles. The condition typically causes a painful, blistering rash on one side of the body, often accompanied by burning, tingling, or itching. Shingles can affect daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life, making prompt evaluation and treatment important.

Shingles can present in a variety of ways. Many people experience a painful, burning, or tingling sensation on one side of the body, often followed by a red, blistering rash. Some may also have itching, sensitivity to touch, or a feeling of numbness in the affected area. In addition, flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, fever, or headache may occur. These symptoms can interfere with daily activities, sleep, and overall quality of life, making timely evaluation and treatment important.

Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy occurs when the nerves that send messages between your brain, spinal cord, and body are damaged or inflamed. This can be caused by diabetes, injury, infections, or other medical conditions.

Symptoms often include burning or tingling sensations, numbness in the hands or feet, sharp or stabbing pain, and muscle weakness or coordination problems.

Diabetic Neuropathy

A common complication of diabetes, diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by prolonged high blood sugar levels. It often affects the legs and feet but can also impact other areas.

Symptoms include numbness, tingling, or pain in the legs and feet, sensitivity to touch, and muscle weakness. Severe cases can lead to balance issues or ulcers from unnoticed injuries.

Radiculopathy

Radiculopathy is caused by compression or irritation of a nerve root in the spine. This can happen in the neck (cervical), mid-back (thoracic), or lower back (lumbar).

Shooting pain, numbness, or tingling that follows a nerve path, often from the neck down the arm or the lower back into the legs. Radiculopathy may also cause muscle weakness or coordination issues.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)

CRPS is a chronic pain condition that usually affects one limb after an injury. It involves abnormal nerve responses and may worsen over time without treatment.

Symptoms include intense, burning pain, swelling, skin temperature or color changes, and sensitivity to touch. Pain often feels out of proportion to the original injury.
